Palmer Cemetery

Dickinson, Franklin County, New York

• On 5 May 2002, I visited this cemetery to photograph and transcribe it. Upon completion, it was compared to two previous transcriptions. One was compiled in May 1979 by a member of the Saranac Lake Genealogical & Historical Society. It contains the following notation: "Cemetery in very poor condition, most stones broken and crumbly. Many unreadable. Had to do rubbings - many not done. Cemetery was supposedly restored a few years ago." The second transcription, believed to be independently done, is from an unknown source. At the beginning of this second transcription is the following note: "This is a very small cemetery located on what is now known as Palmer Road in the Village of Dickinson Center, Franklin County, New York. It is located across the road from my grandfather's farm house. When I was very young I used to walk through this cemetery and it always saddened me to see so many young people buried here. The cemetery was quite rundown 55+ years ago and needed a lot of repairs. A few years back a group of young people went into this cemetery and cleaned out weeds and other debris that had collected over the last 75-100 years. They did the best they could but some stones are upside down on the ground, some are sunk into the ground too far to read, and others have somehow either disappeared or never were there. I was unable to come up with the spouse name in most cases but was able to find out who their parents were from family members and neighbors who still live in Dickinson Center. Although this is the Palmer Cemetery, today there are few Palmers living in the area. Many have relocated and the others are dead."
• The oldest burial appears to be that of Polly, wife of John RAMSDELL, who died Feb. 1, 1838 at age 44 yrs.
