Northern New York
Tombstone Transcription Project

NOTE: In December of 2017, RootsWeb's server went down and they lost all of their websites. At that time, I purchased a url and started paying a company to host the site. The drawback was that if anything ever happened to me, the site would disappear. In August of 2023, I learned that my site might be eligible for free hosting at NYGenWeb. I would still be able to make edits and there would be little worry about all of my hard work eventually disappearing. This was an easy decision, and I moved my tombstone transcription project yet again. If you encounter any problems, please let me know! I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Alan at FreeFind.com for helping me with the search engine!
The search engine is only currently working as a site search. It is not working with the pull-down menus for the counties.

HOW TO TRANSCRIBE A CEMETERY

MUSEUMS OF ADIRONDACK HISTORY - John Sasso compiled this map of museums and permanent indoor exhibits with content pertaining to the history of the Adirondacks. This includes artifacts, models/dioramas, and other material meant to educate the public on the history of the region or locality, as well as the heritage of the people within. Counties, towns, hamlets/villages, and other regions which are within or a part of the Adirondack Park (as described in the book Adirondack 102 Club by Martin Podskoch) are covered.

NEW YORK STATE ARCHIVES - Check out the gallery for digital photographs or use the "Rediscovering New York Culture and History link to find out about historical records in local governments and historical organizations throughout New York.

LINKS TO OTHER SOURCES FOR CEMETERY INFORMATION:

  • Cemetery Records Online
  • Billion Graves - This is one of my favorites because all information comes directly from the stone. The site includes a map indicating precisely where in the cemetery each stone is located.
  • Find a Grave - This site is quite well known. However, I have often found inaccurate data or data added from obituaries, personal knowledge, etc. I prefer to know the precise data on the stone and draw my own conclusions as a family genealogist.
  • St. Lawrence County Cemeteries - Anne Cady's Work -
This is a wonderful site if you are looking for cemetery information or tombstone photos for St. Lawrence County, New York. She has since added most of her work to Find a Grave.
  • How to record a cemetery - Steve Paul Johnson gives advice on transcribing tombstone information.
  • Interment Net - The Largest Online Library of Cemetery Records along with many interesting articles on preserving the historical information found on tombstones.
  • The Cemetery Nut - Gloria Pare expresses her thoughts about visiting and recording cemeteries.

VILLAGE, TOWN, COUNTY, & STATE HISTORIANS - This is a list of historians who may be able to help in your search.
